The High School for Recording Arts Los Angeles is the second in a series of remixes on the culturally sustaining/revitalizing pedagogies of Hip-Hop Based Education. The first school, High School for Recording Arts, opened in St. Paul, MN in 1998. David “TC” Ellis, having already experienced a storied career as one of Minnesota’s first rap artists, decided to use his own experiences as a musician and student to open a new school for young people.

Is giving students and teachers a voice in decisions innovative? I would argue that it is. We live in a society where decisions are typically made by those in power without the consideration of those affected by the decisions. We see this in politics, in business, in education, and even portrayed in movies. Teachers typically have to work with a curriculum developed by someone else without the ability to alter it to fit their teaching style.

On February 26, 2019, Esperanza Spalding visited our partner school, Conservatory Lab Charter School. This was a magical moment for students as well as the adults who teach them music on a daily basis. Esperanza met the second grade orchestra named for her. She talked about the trust and freedom she saw in their eyes—something in short supply in most schools today, particularly under-resourced urban schools.

Recently, the CAS team took a tour of Brooke High School, in Boston’s Roslindale neighborhood, to learn about the role school design plays in shaping the student experience. The building, which opened in August of 2018, was designed by CAS board member Jonathan Garland, when he was an associate with Arrowstreet, Inc.

On January 18, 2019, we hosted one of the highlights of our year, the Perrone-Sizer Institute for Creative Leadership’s Capstone Consultancy Day at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. More than 100 leaders, experts, educators, students, family and friends turned out to participate in structured discussions designed to help each member of the 2018-2019 cohort explore a question arising out of their Capstone projects at mid-year. The Capstone is an opportunity for cohort members to pursue a project that engages multiple stakeholders in their school, organization, and community to effect change. T

On Friday, January 18, during the annual Capstone Consultancy Day at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, the Perrone-Sizer Institute for Creative Leadership’s participants shared questions emerging from their in-progress Leadership Capstone projects with more than 100 colleagues, mentors, friends, and experts. This day of learning started with remarks from Perrone Sizer Institute co-founder and co-director Carmen Torres about her friend and motivational force, Luis Garden Acosta.

The Capstone Leadership Project, which the Perrone-Sizer Institute for Creative Leadership (PSi) builds toward throughout the year, is designed to suit the professional goals and interests of each individual in the cohort and to build their leadership skills. Through these projects, cohort members strive to improve outcomes for youth and families by leveraging partnerships between community-based organizations and their own schools or organizations.

In April 2018, the Center for Artistry and Scholarship was privileged to bring musicians and educators Helena and Paulo Rodrigues to the Boston area all the way from Lisbon, Portugal. Helena and Paulo founded Companhia de Música Teatral, a music and theatre company in Portugal that specializes in creating artistic and educational projects that have music at the root of interdisciplinary practice.

At the end of March, I attended the Deeper Learning conference, which took place at High Tech High’s campus in San Diego. This was my first time at Deeper Learning, and I got a good sense of why this is an important gathering for progressive educators throughout the United States. In some ways, Deeper Learning is a new iteration of the Coalition of Essential Schools (CES) and that made me very happy. The Common Principles were the foundation of CES and much of Deeper Learning has its roots there.

On April 6, the Mary Lyon Pilot High School in Brighton, MA welcomed the Perrone-Sizer Institute for Creative Leadership (PSi) into its community to experience its unique full inclusion model, which accommodates 14 general education students and 6 students with emotional impairments in each classroom.

In March, Demarkes Jackson, a student at Boston Day and Evening Academy (BDEA), traveled to Austin, TX to participate in a panel titled, “No, I Won’t ‘See You at McDonalds’ & Other Stories” at SXSW EDU, a conference and festival that “cultivates and empowers a community of engaged stakeholders to advance teaching and learning.” Demarkes was joined by leaders from around the country who are designing and launching alternative high schools for students who are off track for graduation.
